I'm going to take a serious look at the SSA backend. I was able to reproduce Steve's errors with tty vs. file redirection. That's the first bug to fix, so that the regression tests give reasonable output. Like I said before, I recall running into this before, but I can't quite remember what the exact problem was. Hopefull it will come to me.
