Ah, I hadn't noticed that it was a string list and not a char list. It is true that the cases I see the factor of 2 in tend to have very long lines. I'll see if I can produce a small test case which demonstrates the problem. Note, it isn't horrible, but it is not good. The factor of 2 hurts.
