I hadn't thought of the pre-compiled libmlton.a having knowledge of the constants in it. This could be a big problem. Note that even adding RPM dependencies isn't going to fix things since the old shared libraries still are available. It is just that newly compiled code (and hence the output of MLton) isn't going to use them.
