I remember that in the past one idea was that perhaps nucleic was suffereing
from a lack of alighment of floating point locations.  I wonder if that could
be the case?  Do we align memory locations that are NOT in the heap which are
doubles?  A quick check reveals that gcc does.  Of course even if we did that
it wouldn't be the same since we probably do more heap references than C
code.
