I certainly agree that it would be slower, but I don't think it would be too
bad for limited uses.  I'm thinking about the 64-bit size needed for lseek and
stat on files bigger than 2 gig and the like.  I.e., it would be like Int32 in
SML/NJ: you pay a big price, but it is there and not bad for limited uses.
I'm certainly not suggesting that Int would become Int64 on x86's or any thing
like that.
