Let me add my dislike for the autoconf and friends system.  It was usable and
perhaps worth while in the old days of many very  incompatible  Unix  systems
(think AIX vs. HP-UX), but for a compiler which needs to know a lot about the
target I really don't think it is at all worth it.

One real pain was that the files you need are pretty awful to read,  being  a
strange combination of m4 and/or Make and/or shell, etc.
