He'll be working as part of an undergraduate research
program (urop) which is probably more like 50-60 hours 
over the course of the semester.  You're probably correct
that modifying the type-checker is probably too difficult
right now.  I was also thinking of him working on the
front-end to have MLton generate reasonable (type) error messages 
on the ast, but I'm not sure whether this would be doable
in a semester working part-time.
