I reran on my dual 1.6 GHz Athlon (my usual benchmarking machine) and
got similar results.

MLton0 -- mlton -detect-overflow true
MLton1 -- mlton -detect-overflow false

run time ratio
benchmark MLton1
boyer       1.32
peek        1.32

And on my 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 I get yet different results.

run time ratio
benchmark MLton1
boyer       1.36
peek        0.58


Ahh, the vagaries of benchmarking.
