Speaking of the optimization mentioned about cascaded conversions, gcc handles
the case where you convert an unsigned int to an unsigned long long and then
square it correctly:  Just one multiply, not 3.  That can be a big deal.
I don't see a clean way of handling all of these things other than to try
to keep track of the range of values an expression can take on.
