I would really not like tabs being eliminated. Look: I live in the Unix world where tabs are every 8 spaces. It isn't universal, but it really is the standard. If people want to use other tools, I would say let them convert the tabs to spaces. Note, I use a simple tool to expand and contract leading white-space to tabs.
